Stolen Car Case Takes Twist After Suspect Calls Police About Towed Vehicle

NEW CASTLE, DENew Castle County Police arrested a 21-year-old man after an alleged vehicle theft that took an unusual turn when the suspect contacted authorities seeking to retrieve his belongings from the stolen car, officials said.

According to police, officers were dispatched around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 9, to the unit block of Fairway Road in the Hunters Crossing neighborhood for a report of a stolen Hyundai Sonata. The vehicle’s owner told police the car had been left running and unattended with the keys inside while warming up. Minutes later, the victim returned to find the vehicle missing.

The following day, at approximately 11:45 a.m., the New Castle County Regional Communications Center received a call from a man who identified himself as Kayonne Baxter. Police allege Baxter reported that he had taken the Hyundai Sonata the previous day and said the vehicle had since been towed from another location. He told dispatchers he was attempting to recover his personal property, which he said remained inside the vehicle.

Officers responded to the Fairway Road area and located Baxter, 21, who was taken into custody without incident. Police later recovered the Hyundai Sonata from a nearby towing company, where Baxter’s belongings were found inside.

Baxter was transported to New Castle County Police Headquarters and charged with one felony count of theft of a motor vehicle. The charge is an allegation.

He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on his own recognizance pending further court proceedings.

As with all criminal matters, a suspect, arrestee, or defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
