NEWARK, DE — A late-evening robbery in a busy section of Newark led to the arrest of two local men after police say surveillance footage helped corroborate a victim’s account of what unfolded along East Delaware Avenue.
According to Newark Police, officers were contacted at approximately 10:03 p.m. on January 4, 2026, by a man who reported he had been robbed earlier that evening around 7:11 p.m. in the 200 block of East Delaware Avenue. The victim told investigators he was followed by two unknown men who later confronted him.
Police allege that during the encounter, one of the men removed the victim’s wallet and took an undisclosed amount of cash, while the second individual threatened the victim with bodily harm. The two suspects then fled the area on foot.
Officers launched an investigation that included a review of surveillance video from the surrounding area. Authorities said the footage provided evidence that supported the victim’s account of the alleged robbery.
A short time later, police located two men in the area of East Main Street who matched the descriptions obtained during the investigation. Both individuals were taken into custody without incident and identified as Lawrence Smith, 40, of Newark, and Carl White, 36, of Newark.
Smith and White were each charged with second-degree robbery and second-degree conspiracy. They were arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11, where Smith was assigned $3,000 secured bail and White was assigned $4,000.00 secured bail. Both men were then committed to the custody of the Delaware Department of Correction at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
The charges in this case are allegations, and Smith and White are each presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
