WILMINGTON, DE — A woman already sought by authorities was taken into custody after a swift police response to an alleged daytime burglary in Wilmington, according to city police.
The Wilmington Police Department said a member of its Special Operations Division was in the 800 block of North Shipley Street at approximately 9:39 a.m. on January 6 when the officer was flagged down about a burglary that had just occurred. After obtaining a description of the suspect, the officer conducted a canvass of the surrounding area.
Police allege the officer soon spotted a woman matching that description in the 100 block of Burton Place and made contact with 40-year-old Emily Popkey. She was taken into custody without incident.
Popkey has been charged with alleged third-degree burglary and theft under $1,500, in addition to an outstanding warrant, authorities said. She was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 20 and committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $4,000 secured bail.
Police emphasized that the charges are allegations and that Popkey is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
