WILMINGTON, DE — A Wilmington woman has been charged after police say she accidentally shot herself during a domestic altercation and then falsely reported being attacked by an unknown suspect.
According to the New Castle County Division of Police, the incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Sunday, November 9, 2025, in the Greenview at Chestnut Run community. Officers were dispatched to the unit block of Court Drive after a woman flagged down a bystander and reported she had been shot in the hand.
The woman, later identified as 25-year-old Fatima Chambers-McKnight, told police she was shot by an unidentified person inside the complex before fleeing to a nearby business on Lancaster Pike. She was treated at the scene by emergency personnel and transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Detectives reviewed surveillance footage, conducted interviews, and canvassed the neighborhood. Investigators later determined that Chambers-McKnight’s account was false. According to police, the shooting occurred during a domestic dispute with a man inside an apartment. During the confrontation, Chambers-McKnight allegedly assaulted the man, and when he attempted to leave, she drew a handgun from her jacket. Police allege she accidentally discharged the weapon, striking her own hand.
Authorities said Chambers-McKnight then discarded the loaded firearm, which was later recovered by K9 Havoc and his handler during a search of the area.
Chambers-McKnight has been charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, first-degree reckless endangering, third-degree assault, and aggravated menacing. She was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2 and held in lieu of $17,000 secured bail.
Police emphasized that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
