Police: Wilmington Man Caught With Over 100 Grams of Marijuana

WILMINGTON, DEWilmington Police have arrested a 21-year-old man on drug-related charges following an investigation on the city’s north side.

According to officials, the arrest occurred on August 20, 2025, at approximately 4:03 p.m., when members of the Drug, Organized Crime, and Vice Division were conducting surveillance in the 600 block of North Washington Street. Officers reported observing what they believed to be drug activity and made contact with Kanye Purnell, who was taken into custody without incident.

Investigators say Purnell was found to be in possession of 119.1 grams of marijuana as well as drug paraphernalia.

Purnell has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Deliver
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $5,100 secured bail.

As in all criminal cases, it is important to note that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
