BENSALEM, PA — A Philadelphia man has been arrested and charged following an alleged attempted sexual assault at a Bensalem apartment complex on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Bensalem Township Police Department.
Police said that on October 28, 2025, at approximately 2:48 p.m., officers were dispatched to Lafayette Gardens Apartments, located at 520 Bristol Pike, after a woman reported being attacked inside her residence. According to investigators, the victim told police that a heavyset white male entered her apartment through an unlocked door, grabbed her, and began removing his clothing while making inappropriate and threatening remarks.
The woman reportedly screamed for help and fought off the attacker, prompting him to flee the scene. Officers said the suspect ran across the Poquessing Creek into Philadelphia. Bensalem Police quickly established a perimeter, and a man matching the description was stopped at a Sunoco gas station near Frankford Avenue and Knights Road.
Authorities identified the suspect as 45-year-old Louis Sophie of Southampton Road, Philadelphia. A background check revealed that Sophie is a registered sex offender in Florida, police said.
Sophie was taken into custody and transported to the Bensalem Township Police Department for processing. He was charged with Burglary, Attempted Rape, Simple Assault, and related offenses.
He was arraigned by District Justice Stacy Wertman and remanded to the Bucks County Correctional Facility in lieu of 10% of $1,000,000 bail.
Bensalem Police commended the victim for resisting the assault and contacting authorities immediately, which they said allowed officers to respond rapidly and locate the suspect.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
