HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced this week that law enforcement agencies seized a record number of fentanyl doses and hundreds of illegal firearms across the Commonwealth in 2025, marking what he called significant progress during his first year in office.

Sunday said the Office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Narcotics Investigation, working with law enforcement partners, seized nearly 57 million doses of fentanyl last year. That figure does not include nearly 100,000 fentanyl pills also recovered during investigations.

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, as little as 2 milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal. State officials estimated the street value of the fentanyl seized by the Attorney General’s office at more than $58 million.

“Fentanyl continues to kill Pennsylvanians, erasing victims’ hopes and dreams, and leaving loved ones with a heartache that never heals,” Sunday said. “That is why targeting traffickers will remain a top priority. This record number of seizures by our team, along with collaborators, is an indicator of great progress — but also a sign of the tremendous demand, and profits, available to predatory dealers.”

Authorities reported that nearly 30 million fentanyl doses were seized in the greater Philadelphia area, while close to 20 million doses were recovered in the Pittsburgh metropolitan region.

In addition to drug enforcement, Attorney General-led Gun Violence Task Forces seized 539 firearms that were illegally possessed across Pennsylvania during 2025. Officials said the weapons were illegally trafficked, lacked serial numbers, or were held by individuals prohibited from owning firearms, including those with prior felony convictions.

Investigators noted that many of the recovered weapons had been modified with illegal machine gun conversion switches.

The Gun Violence Task Forces are collaborations involving local, state, and federal agencies focused on tracking illegal firearm movement, unlawful possession, and acts of gun violence.

“These firearms so often ended up at the scenes of violent crimes as a shooter’s weapon of choice, so every single seizure is impactful in achieving public safety goals,” Sunday said. “If Pennsylvanians cannot walk their children to school, or visit the neighborhood grocer or pharmacy without the threat of gun violence, that means we still have work to do. I thank our partners for sharing the commitment to targeting illegal firearms and those who traffic and use them to commit crimes.”
