Middletown Man Arrested After Alleged Gunfire Incident in Newark Neighborhood

NEWARK, DE — Officers with the New Castle County Division of Police have arrested a Middletown man following an alleged shooting incident that occurred Saturday night in a Newark residential community.

Authorities said that just after 10:00 p.m. on October 18, 2025, patrol officers responded to the unit block of Sanford Drive for reports of gunfire. The preliminary investigation indicated that a male suspect, who was known to the victim, allegedly entered the rear yard of the victim’s residence and fired multiple shots.

When officers arrived, they reportedly recovered seven shell casings from the yard. Through investigative efforts, police identified the suspect as 36-year-old Jonathon Mead of Middletown. Officers later located Mead at his home, where he was taken into custody following the execution of a search warrant with assistance from the SWAT team. A firearm was also recovered during the search.

Mead was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, four counts of first-degree reckless endangering, and one count of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and held in lieu of $87,000 cash bail.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
