Man With Gun on Roof Sparks Tense Night in East Lansdowne

EAST LANSDOWNE, PA — A 38-year-old man was taken into custody after police said he was found on the roof of a residence holding a handgun and claiming he was under attack.

According to the East Lansdowne Police Department, officers responded at approximately 9:46 p.m. February 12 to the 100 block of Beverly Avenue for a report of a person with a gun.

Police stated that upon arrival, officers located Stephon Dowden, 38, on the roof of a residence holding a handgun. Dowden allegedly told officers that numerous individuals with guns were attacking him, but police reported that no other persons were located in the area.

With assistance from Lansdowne, Yeadon and Upper Darby police, officers removed Dowden from the roof and recovered the firearm, police said.

Authorities allege that Dowden did not possess a license to carry the firearm and did not own it. Police further stated that Dowden was subject to two separate Protection From Abuse orders that prohibited him from possessing firearms.

Dowden was taken into custody and committed to a crisis center for evaluation, according to police. Charges including firearms not to be carried without a license and violations of Protection From Abuse orders were filed with Magisterial District Court 32-2-51.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
