Man Killed After Hours-Long Police Standoff in New Castle County

WILMINGTON, DE — A man was shot and killed by police Tuesday afternoon following an hours-long standoff after officers responded to reports of gunfire at a residence in New Castle County.

Officers with the New Castle County Division of Police responded at approximately 3:50 p.m. Tuesday to the unit block of Ramsey Road after receiving reports of shots fired, according to police.

Investigators reported that officers arriving at the scene heard additional gunshots coming from inside the residence while they were conducting their initial investigation.

Police said the department’s Crisis Management Group was activated and responded to the scene. According to authorities, officers continued to hear gunfire from inside the residence while specialized units remained on location.

After several hours, police reported that a male subject exited the residence and encountered officers outside. According to the New Castle County Division of Police, officers discharged their firearms during the encounter, striking the man.

Police said the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the individual’s identity, stating it is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The incident remains under investigation, police reported. According to the New Castle County Division of Police, the department will conduct an internal investigation in coordination with the Delaware Department of Justice Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust.

Police said additional information will be released as the investigation continues.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
