WILMINGTON, DE — A Newark man has been charged following a police investigation into alleged illegal marijuana sales operating out of a Wilmington business, where officers say they recovered a loaded handgun, thousands of grams of marijuana, and cash.
Wilmington Police said members of the Drug, Organized Crime, and Vice Division began investigating 53-year-old Ali Ahmed in January in connection with suspected illegal marijuana sales at a business in the 900 block of Maryland Avenue known as VIP Smoke Shop.
According to police, officers executed a search warrant at the business at approximately 10:00 a.m. on January 16. Ahmed was taken into custody without incident during the operation.
Investigators allege the search resulted in the seizure of a loaded .9mm handgun, approximately 4,630 grams of marijuana and marijuana-related products, and $670 in currency.
As a result of the investigation, Ahmed was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (Tier 2), possession of a controlled substance (Tier 2), and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police said Ahmed was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on $85,100 secured bail.
All charges are allegations. Ahmed is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
