Loaded Gun, Crack, and MDA Found After Wild Wilmington Chase Ends by State Park

WILMINGTON, DE — A midday police investigation into alleged drug trafficking spiraled into a pursuit that ended near Brandywine Creek State Park, where officers say they recovered a loaded handgun and multiple types of illegal drugs and arrested two men.

According to Wilmington Police, members of the department’s Drug, Organized Crime, and Vice Division began investigating 38-year-old Antwan Douglas and 23-year-old Shaun Powell at about 12:20 p.m. on January 9 in connection with suspected illegal drug sales in the area of West 27th and North Washington streets.

As part of the investigation, officers attempted to stop a vehicle linked to the pair, but police allege the vehicle fled the area. A short time later, officers located the vehicle near Adams Dam Road and Brandywine Creek State Park. Investigators said they observed Douglas and Powell walking away from the vehicle and took both men into custody without further incident.

During the encounter, police reported recovering a loaded 9mm handgun, approximately 3.89 grams of crack cocaine, 40 grams of marijuana, and 46 doses of MDA, a synthetic psychoactive drug. Authorities allege the items were connected to drug distribution activity.

Douglas was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited, three counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, and carrying a concealed deadly weapon. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after bail was set at $140,000 cash-only.

Powell was charged with disregarding a police officer’s signal, in addition to traffic-related citations. He was also arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $2,100 secured bail.

All of the charges in the case are allegations, and Douglas and Powell are each presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
