Juvenile Duo’s Bold Daytime Pursuit Sparks Questions in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, DE — Two 12-year-old boys were taken into custody after Wilmington Police responded to reports of an alleged attempted vehicle theft last week, marking a troubling series of incidents involving juveniles and stolen vehicles in the city.

Police were dispatched at approximately 10:57 a.m. on November 26 to the area of West 6th and North Union Streets following a report that two male juveniles had allegedly attempted to steal a vehicle in the 200 block of Rodman Street. According to police, the reporting person followed the youths and managed to detain one of them until officers arrived. The first juvenile was taken into custody without incident.

Additional responding units searched the surrounding area and located the second boy near West 5th and North Union Streets. He was also taken into custody without incident.

Investigators later determined that both juveniles had allegedly attempted to steal a second vehicle in the 300 block of North Bancroft Parkway earlier that morning.

The first 12-year-old has been charged with possession of burglary tools and second-degree conspiracy. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on $3,000 unsecured bail.

The second 12-year-old faces two counts of attempted motor vehicle theft and two counts of criminal mischief involving property damage exceeding $1,000 but less than $5,000. He was also arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on $3,000 unsecured bail.

All individuals charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
