Infant in Critical but Stable Condition After Alleged Stabbing

COATESVILLE, PA — A 3-month-old infant was airlifted to a Philadelphia hospital Wednesday after an alleged stabbing inside a Coatesville apartment, authorities said, in a case that has drawn swift response from local police and the Chester County District Attorney’s Office.

Coatesville Police were dispatched at approximately 11:36 a.m. on February 11, 2026, to the 2000 block of Smithbridge Drive for a reported stabbing involving an infant.

Upon arrival, officers took 44-year-old Michael Phillips into custody. Police allege that Phillips stabbed his 3-month-old child in the abdomen inside the apartment. Authorities further allege that after the stabbing, the father carried the infant outside and threw the child into the snow.

The infant was transported by helicopter to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where the child underwent emergency surgery.

In a statement, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office said, “The Chester County District Attorney’s Office is aware of an incident involving a stabbing that occurred in Coatesville, and are supporting the City of Coatesville Police Department in the investigation.”

As of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, prosecutors provided an update on the child’s condition, stating: “At this time, the child victim is out of surgery and in critical but stable condition. We will provide additional updates as they become available tomorrow.”

Police identified the investigation as a stabbing case being handled by the department’s Detective Unit under reference number 16-26-06851.

The allegations outlined by investigators remain under active review. As with all criminal proceedings, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
