Gunpoint Terror Ends: Philly Carjacker Gets 10 Years for Violent Crimes

Court News

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Kavon Coleman, 23, of Philadelphia, was sentenced to 10 years and one month in prison followed by five years of supervised release for his role in a violent carjacking and related firearm offenses. The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Juan R. Sánchez.

Coleman was charged with carjacking, aiding and abetting, and using, carrying, and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. The charges stem from a February 2022 incident in which Coleman and an accomplice committed a gunpoint carjacking in Philadelphia. Their victim, a woman waiting for a food order in her car at 3300 Fairmont Avenue, was forced to surrender her vehicle when Coleman’s accomplice brandished a firearm and demanded her keys. Coleman then entered the driver’s seat and fled the scene with the stolen car.

The following day, Coleman engaged in a high-speed chase with police in another carjacked vehicle, crashing into another motorist during his escape attempt. Authorities recovered a “ghost gun” discarded by Coleman, a firearm with no serial number, as well as other evidence connecting him to the crimes.

After jury selection had begun, Coleman pleaded guilty to all charges on July 9, 2024.

The case was investigated by the Carjacking Task Force, established in 2022 to address the surge in violent carjackings in Philadelphia. The task force is a collaborative effort involving the FBI, the ATF, and the Philadelphia Police Department.

Assistant United States Attorneys Katherine Shulman and Joseph LaBar prosecuted the case.
