NEWARK, DE — A 73-year-old Newark man has been charged after police say he allegedly threatened a medical office employee with a handgun during a dispute over billing.
According to Delaware State Police, troopers responded on March 20 to a medical office at 1 Centurian Drive for a reported weapons violation tied to an incident that occurred the previous afternoon.
Investigators said the suspect allegedly visited the office on March 19 and asked to speak with a specific employee regarding a billing issue. During the interaction, police reported the suspect allegedly lifted his shirt to reveal a handgun and made a statement indicating it would be easy to take the employee hostage.
According to investigators, troopers obtained a description of the firearm and later identified the suspect as Teddy Torres, 73, of Newark. Police reported Torres was licensed to carry a concealed deadly weapon.
Authorities said troopers later located Torres driving on Lucerne Drive and conducted a traffic stop. During a search, police said a handgun matching the earlier description was recovered.
Police reported Torres was taken into custody and charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, aggravated menacing, and harassment.
According to authorities, Torres was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $67,000 cash bond.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
