WILMINGTON, DE — A 13-year-old student was taken into custody after a firearm was found inside a backpack at a Wilmington school Tuesday afternoon, police said.
According to Wilmington Police, at approximately 2:03 p.m. on March 24, a School Resource Officer assigned to Maurice Pritchett Academy was notified about a firearm inside a student’s backpack.
Police said the officer made contact with the 13-year-old male and took him into custody without incident.
Authorities reported recovering a 9mm handgun, an unloaded magazine, and seven rounds of 9mm ammunition from the backpack.
The juvenile was charged with two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited and carrying a concealed deadly weapon, according to police.
Police said the juvenile was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the New Castle County Detention Center on $9,000 secured bail.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
