Early-Morning Encounter Leads to Burglary Allegation in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, DEWilmington Police arrested a 42-year-old man early Monday morning after officers reported witnessing a vehicle break-in in progress on North Shipley Street.

According to the department, officers from the Uniformed Services Division were patrolling the 900 block of North Shipley Street at approximately 3:51 a.m. on December 1 when they observed a man, later identified as Richard Gibson, allegedly breaking into a vehicle. Police say Gibson exited the vehicle carrying items believed to be proceeds from the break-in and was taken into custody immediately and without incident.

Gibson has been charged with third-degree burglary and theft under $1,500. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 20 and released on $2,500 unsecured bail.

All individuals charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
