NEWARK, DE — A 52-year-old New Jersey man is facing a felony assault charge after police said he allegedly sprayed another driver with pepper spray during an argument at a Newark convenience store.
According to Delaware State Police, troopers responded at approximately 12:30 p.m. February 26 to the Wawa in the 200 block of East Chestnut Hill Road for a report of an assault.
Police stated that a preliminary investigation determined two drivers became involved in a verbal dispute after one accused the other of crashing into his vehicle. During the argument, Aldo Funari II, 52, of Carneys Point Township, allegedly sprayed a 69-year-old Newark man in the eyes with pepper spray.
The victim was treated at the scene by emergency medical services and released, authorities said.
Funari was taken into custody without incident and transported to Troop 6, police reported.
He has been charged with second-degree assault. According to police, Funari was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on $2,500 unsecured bond.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
