December Shooting Case Breaks Open as Police Arrest Suspect Weeks Later

WILMINGTON, DE — Wilmington police say they have arrested a man in connection with a shooting last month that left a young man critically injured and sparked a weeks-long investigation.

According to police, officers from the Uniformed Services Division responded at approximately 9:29 p.m. on December 3 to the 300 block of West Twelfth Street for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a 24-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

The case was assigned to Detective Avery Stewart of the Criminal Investigations Division. Through the course of the investigation, police allege evidence led detectives to identify Edward Shepard, 29, as the suspected shooter. Authorities said arrest warrants were subsequently obtained.

On January 23, police located Shepard in the 1000 block of South Market Street and took him into custody without incident.

Shepard has been charged with attempted murder in the first degree, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony. All charges are allegations.

Police said Shepard was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 20 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after bail was set at $680,000.00 cash.

All criminal charges are allegations. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
