NEWARK, DE — Authorities are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in Newark that claimed the life of one pedestrian and left several others injured, following an incident involving a U-Haul truck.
On the afternoon of April 28, 2025, Newark Police officers located a U-Haul truck in the 200 block of East Main Street. The vehicle, previously reported as unauthorized after it was not returned on its due date of March 18, was occupied by two suspects and parked in a lot. When officers attempted to detain the individuals, the truck sped off, striking a marked police vehicle and driving over a curb.
The suspects ignored police commands to stop and fled westbound on East Main Street. Officers did not pursue the vehicle and chose to remain at the shopping center. Just minutes later, at approximately 4:35 p.m., the U-Haul collided with two pedestrians who were standing near a parked car. The truck then hit multiple parked vehicles before coming to a stop further down Main Street.
Emergency responders immediately arrived on site to assist. Despite efforts to save the first pedestrian’s life, they were pronounced deceased at the scene. Their identity has not yet been released, pending notification of family. The second pedestrian sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Three additional victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the incident and were transported to a nearby hospital. Another three individuals experienced minor injuries, which did not require further medical care.
The driver of the U-Haul was also seriously injured and transported to an area hospital for treatment. Both the driver and passenger were detained by police after the truck was disabled, and an active investigation is now being conducted by the Newark Police Department Traffic Unit.
Local emergency agencies, including Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company, the University of Delaware Emergency Care Unit, Christiana Fire Company, and New Castle County Paramedics, contributed to the response and care of those injured.
Investigators have emphasized that this appears to be an isolated incident, with no ongoing threat to public safety. The police continue to examine details of the case, and further updates will be released as they become available.
Newark Police encourage anyone with information related to this case to contact the department directly at (302) 366-7111 as they work toward concluding their inquiry.
All suspects, arrestees, or defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
