WILMINGTON, DE — Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a woman Sunday night and left investigators searching for the driver responsible.
Troopers were dispatched at approximately 9:15 p.m. on December 28 to East Lea Boulevard near Colony Boulevard after reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. According to police, the preliminary investigation indicates that an unknown vehicle was traveling in an undetermined direction along East Lea Boulevard when it struck a pedestrian who was in the roadway in the same area.
Authorities said the vehicle fled the scene immediately after the impact. The circumstances leading up to the collision, including the direction of travel and contributing factors, remain under investigation.
The pedestrian, identified as a 40-year-old woman from Dallas, Texas, was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her identity has not been released pending notification of family members.
East Lea Boulevard was closed for approximately two hours as investigators processed the scene and cleared the roadway.
At this stage of the investigation, no suspect or vehicle description has been released. State police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, has surveillance or dash-camera footage, or possesses information that may assist investigators to contact Corporal K. Oakes at (302) 365-8483. Police emphasized that any criminal conduct associated with this case remains under investigation and would constitute allegations. Any suspect, arrestee, or defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
