PHILADELPHIA, PA — Michael Jefferson, a 42-year-old correctional officer at the Federal Detention Center (FDC) in Philadelphia, has been arrested and indicted on serious charges stemming from the alleged sexual abuse of an inmate under his supervision.
The indictment, announced on May 1, charges Jefferson with aggravated sexual abuse, sexual abuse, sexual abuse of a ward, and deprivation of rights under color of law. The alleged incident occurred on or about July 6, 2024, when prosecutors claim Jefferson used force to engage in a sexual act with the victim, causing bodily harm.
According to the indictment, Jefferson allegedly violated the victim’s constitutional right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment. This right, secured by U.S. law, includes protection from sexual abuse by correctional officers acting under the authority of their position.
Following the allegations, Jefferson has been suspended from his role at the Federal Bureau of Prisons. If convicted of the charges, he faces a maximum potential sentence of life imprisonment.
The investigation was conducted by the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Meghan Claiborne.
Authorities underscore that the allegations are accusations at this stage, and Jefferson is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
