CLAYMONT, DE — A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a shooting that injured a 26-year-old male in the Stockdale neighborhood Monday morning, according to the New Castle County Division of Police.
Officers responded to the unit block of Palace Avenue at approximately 8:35 a.m. on July 7, 2025, following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. Officers provided immediate first aid until Emergency Medical Services arrived and transported the man to a nearby hospital. He was treated and later released.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Unit determined that the incident stemmed from an altercation between the victim and Johnny Washington, 22. Authorities allege that during the dispute, Washington retrieved a firearm and fired multiple rounds at the victim.
At the time of the shooting, the victim was standing next to a 25-year-old woman and a 3-year-old child. Neither the woman nor the child was physically harmed. In addition to striking the victim, one of the bullets hit an unoccupied vehicle parked on the street.
Following the shooting, Washington fled the scene but was quickly located by responding officers and taken into custody without incident.
Washington was transported to New Castle County Police headquarters and subsequently charged with multiple offenses, including first-degree assault, two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, tampering with physical evidence, and criminal mischief over $1,000.
He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $155,000 cash bail.
