Chaos at Abraxas Academy: How a Night of Violence Turned Into a Full-Scale Riot

MORGANTOWN, PA — Authorities are investigating a violent incident at Abraxas Academy, a juvenile detention center in New Morgan Borough, after a riot broke out on the evening of September 1, 2025. The Caernarvon Township Police Department responded to a 911 call at approximately 7:30 p.m., with assistance from multiple local police departments and the Pennsylvania State Police.

According to reports, several inmates allegedly coordinated an attempt to seize control of the facility by assaulting guards. The disturbance resulted in significant property damage, including destroyed security cameras, ripped-out wiring, and broken windows. Investigators say inmates used glass shards as weapons and threatened to stab staff members.

Multiple guards and responding officers sustained injuries, primarily minor cuts and lacerations. Authorities identified those allegedly involved as several juveniles — two aged 15, two aged 17, a 16-year-old, and a 14-year-old — along with 18-year-old Ivan Mora. Each individual is accused of playing a role in the destruction, threats, or assaults.

The estimated cost of repairs to the facility is approximately $4,000. Charges filed in connection with the incident include aggravated assault, riot, reckless endangerment, institutional vandalism, and disorderly conduct. Police reported that arrests were made on September 11, 2025.
