WILMINGTON, DE — A Wilmington man was taken into custody following an alleged armed carjacking that led police on a vehicle pursuit and ended with a crash into a residence, authorities said.
According to the Wilmington Police Department, the incident unfolded around 9:40 p.m. on December 28, when officers assigned to the Uniformed Services Division were in the area of Lancaster Avenue and North DuPont Street and observed a vehicle believed to have been involved in an armed carjacking reported moments earlier.
Police said officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled the area. A short time later, the vehicle was located in the 1900 block of Delaware Avenue, where it allegedly collided with a residence. Officers then made contact with the driver, identified as 31-year-old Devante Burton, who was taken into custody without further incident.
During the investigation, officers recovered what was described as a revolver-style pellet gun.
Burton has been charged with multiple offenses, including alleged first-degree robbery, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, resisting arrest, and criminal mischief under $1,000, in addition to traffic-related citations. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 20 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $205,000 cash-only bail.
Authorities emphasized that all charges are allegations and that Burton is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
