Wilmington Man Armed With Butcher Knife Arrested After Violent Newark Hotel Robbery

NEWARK, DE — A Wilmington man is facing a series of serious charges following an alleged violent robbery at a Newark hotel earlier this month.

On July 3, 2025, at approximately 9:42 p.m., officers from the Newark Police Department responded to a reported robbery at a hotel on the 1100 block of South College Avenue. According to investigators, the suspect approached the victim, striking them in the face before brandishing a knife and swinging it in a stabbing motion. During the attack, the suspect allegedly interfered with the victim’s attempt to call 911, causing the emergency call to disconnect.

Authorities reported that the suspect then took property from the victim before fleeing the scene.

Through investigative efforts, Newark Police identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cortez Crawford of Wilmington. A warrant was issued for his arrest.

On July 5, 2025, Amtrak Police in Wilmington located and detained Crawford. During his arrest, officers found a large butcher knife in his possession. Crawford was subsequently transported to Newark Police headquarters, where he was charged with multiple offenses, including first-degree robbery, possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony, aggravated menacing, third-degree trespass, offensive touching, and malicious interference with emergency communications.

Crawford was arraigned via video before Justice of the Peace Court #11 and ordered to be held in default of $41,151 cash bail. He was then transferred to the custody of Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
