Traffic Stop Turns Violent, Driver Accused of Assaulting Officer

WILMINGTON, DE — A Wilmington man is accused of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest following a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon, police said.

According to the New Castle County Division of Police, officers were conducting proactive patrol on April 1, 2026, at approximately 3:03 p.m. in the area of Governor Printz Boulevard when they initiated a vehicle stop near Prospect Drive on a black Ford Crown Victoria for displaying no registration plate.

Police reported that the driver, identified as 29-year-old Michael Whittaker of Wilmington, was also found to be operating the vehicle with a suspended license.

According to investigators, while officers were speaking with Whittaker outside of the vehicle, he allegedly became aggressive, leading to a physical altercation. During the incident, police said one officer sustained minor injuries.

Authorities reported that Whittaker allegedly continued to escalate the situation by making threats of violence toward responding officers.

Police said Whittaker was taken into custody and transported to New Castle County Police Headquarters.

According to police, he has been charged with second-degree assault involving injury to a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with force, terroristic threatening, and driving while suspended, along with multiple traffic violations including operating an unregistered vehicle, improper lane change, failure to signal, and improper window tint.

Police reported that Whittaker was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on $7,500.00 unsecured bail.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
