COATESVILLE, PA — The footsteps that once crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965 will echo once again — this time along Route 30 in Coatesville.
On March 7, local residents will gather to commemorate the 61st anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March, honoring the courage of those who marched for voting rights on what became known as Bloody Sunday. Organized by Together We Stand Project, “From the Bridge to the Ballot 2026” invites the community to walk in solidarity and reflect on the enduring impact of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Participants will assemble at Gateway Park before retracing a symbolic route from 1st Avenue to 5th Avenue. Last year’s event drew more than 500 attendees, a turnout organizers say reflects Coatesville’s deep commitment to remembering history while encouraging civic engagement today.
“This march is not just about remembering history—it’s about inspiring our community to take action and embrace their civic responsibility,” said organizer Linda Lavender Norris.
Following the march, the community will gather at New Life In Christ Fellowship for a program designed to educate, uplift, and unite. The morning will feature three empowering messages focused on justice, faith, and civic duty, along with a fireside conversation and educational panel exploring how government works and why participation matters. Music and songs of resilience will fill the space, followed by a shared community meal celebrating unity.
“We honor the bravery of those who stood for justice in 1965 and continue to encourage everyone to make their voices heard at the ballot box,” said Rob Marshall, Chairman of Together We Stand Project.
Justin Brown of JB Sports Ventures added, “Events like this remind us that unity and purpose can create real change.”
Organizers are encouraging families, students, faith leaders, and local organizations to attend, emphasizing that the event is both a remembrance and a call to civic responsibility.
