PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Philadelphia Zoo is marking the nation’s 250th anniversary with an ambitious call to action, challenging the public to complete 250,000 “Actions for Animals” by the end of 2026 in an effort to boost conservation, strengthen habitats, and improve quality of life across the region.

The initiative, part of hundreds of events planned in Philadelphia for America’s semiquincentennial, asks individuals and groups to take simple, measurable steps that benefit wildlife, people, and the environment. Qualifying actions range from picking up litter and planting native species to participating in wildlife surveys, reducing single-use plastics, and helping neighbors connect with nature.

Zoo officials said the campaign aligns with the institution’s broader conservation mission while encouraging residents to think differently about how they coexist with the natural world.

As an American first, the Philadelphia Zoo is positioning the effort as both a civic celebration and a long-term investment in environmental stewardship. President and CEO Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman said the goal is for 2026 to be remembered not only for commemorations, but for collective action that protects wildlife and supports a shared future where animals and people thrive together.

Director of Mission Integration Dani Hogan said the challenge is meant to counter feelings of environmental fatigue by showing that small, local actions can add up to meaningful change. She said the city’s creativity and pride will be key in addressing environmental pressures that can feel overwhelming.

Participants must submit their actions at philadelphiazoo.org for them to count toward the 250,000 total. Submissions require basic details, a description of the activity, and a photo. The Zoo will maintain a running tally on the submission page and feature selected actions on its social media channels.

Throughout 2026, the Zoo will also host on-site activities across its 42-acre campus, including creating enrichment for animals, building take-home bird feeders, contributing to conservation research, and participating in biodiversity surveys. Off-campus actions are grouped into categories such as habitat restoration, conservation research, direct assistance to animals, sustainable lifestyle changes, introducing others to nature, and community-based efforts that improve local environments.

To recognize standout contributions, the Zoo plans to award 250 “Gifts of Gratitude” to individuals and groups whose submissions go above and beyond. Prizes will include memberships, family ticket packages, gift cards, special animal experiences, and other Zoo-related rewards, with one submission highlighted each month.

Zoo officials said the campaign reflects an impact that extends far beyond city limits, citing work that ranges from neighborhood plantings in Mantua to wildlife monitoring efforts overseas. They said the 250,000 Actions for Animals Challenge is intended to channel the spirit of America 250 into tangible, lasting benefits for wildlife and communities throughout Philadelphia and beyond.
