PHILADELPHIA, PA — Comcast’s Xfinity (Nasdaq: CMCSA) announced the launch of RealTime4K, an ultra-low latency technology it says will deliver the Super Bowl to Xfinity TV customers just seconds behind live action and up to 30 seconds faster than competing 4K providers.
The company said it is the only major television service offering the game in both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, available through a new Peacock 4K channel that will carry NBC Sports’ Super Bowl presentation along with a full day of 4K Olympics and game-day coverage.
Jon Gieselman, Comcast’s chief growth officer for connectivity and platforms, said delays have long frustrated sports fans, noting that nothing diminishes a live event faster than learning the outcome from a text message or social media before it appears on screen. He said RealTime4K is designed to eliminate those delays, putting Xfinity customers ahead of the action.
Comcast said the new format is enabled by recent upgrades to its network that remove compression steps from the delivery pipeline, allowing live 4K programming to reach homes faster while being delivered at higher bitrates than traditional 4K feeds. The company said the technology applies across all 4K-delivered programming.
Fraser Stirling, Comcast’s global chief product officer, said delivering the best possible live sports experience has driven the company’s innovation strategy, adding that the combination of RealTime4K with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos sets Xfinity apart by offering major events in a faster, more immersive format.
On Super Bowl Sunday, Xfinity TV customers with compatible devices and 4K televisions will be able to access a dedicated Peacock 4K channel beginning with live Olympics coverage in the morning, transitioning to pre-game, halftime, and post-game Super Bowl programming, before returning to Olympic coverage later in the day. The channel will be accessible directly through the X1 guide and the Xfinity Stream app.
Customers without a 4K-capable X1 box will receive prompts to upgrade their equipment or can exchange devices at Xfinity stores, the company said.
Additional information will be available through the Xfinity interface and by voice command, as well as on Peacock’s 4K channel.
