WILMINGTON, DE — Facing a sharp rise in food insecurity across the tri-state area, the WSFS CARES Foundation announced a $100,000 contribution to four major food banks serving Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey.
The funding will be divided among Philabundance ($50,000), the Food Bank of Delaware ($25,000), the Food Bank of South Jersey ($25,000), and an additional $10,000 allocated to the Chester County Food Bank through Philabundance. Collectively, these organizations support hundreds of thousands of residents through direct food distribution, mobile pantries, and community-based partnerships.
Patrick J. Ward, Executive Vice President and Senior Advisor at WSFS Bank and Chairman of the WSFS CARES Foundation, said the decision reflects an urgent need. He stated that nonprofit partners “are on the frontlines of supporting some of the most vulnerable populations” and that the Foundation has a responsibility to “respond decisively during this challenging time.”
Food banks across the region report sustained increases in demand. Loree Jones-Brown, Director of Philabundance, said the contribution “will help provide thousands of meals to families in need during challenging times,” noting that requests for assistance continue to grow.
Larry Haas, Chief Development Officer at the Food Bank of Delaware, said WSFS’ support will translate into “75,000 nutritious meals and vital resources,” adding that the organization is “incredibly grateful for their commitment to fighting hunger.”
At the Food Bank of South Jersey, President and CEO Fred Wasiak stressed the timing of the donation. He said the contribution will help keep food flowing through its network and ensure vulnerable populations “have access to the nourishment they need.”
The announcement coincides with WSFS Bank’s annual food drive benefiting Sharing Excess and the Sunday Breakfast Mission. Community members can donate nonperishable items at any WSFS banking office through the end of the year. Beyond financial support, WSFS Associates are volunteering at food banks and pantries throughout the region to help meet the escalating need.
