PHILADELPHIA, PA — WHYY is stepping into the sports arena with a new national program, Sports in America, hosted by award-winning journalist David Greene. The weekly public radio show and podcast debuts September 30, 2025, with distribution through PRX to public stations and listeners across the country.
Beyond the Scoreboard
The program aims to highlight the human side of sports through long-form conversations with athletes, coaches, and fans. Rather than focusing on box scores or highlight reels, Greene will explore the personal stories, struggles, and triumphs that make sports a central part of American culture.
Upcoming episodes feature Baseball Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez, NFL great Larry Fitzgerald, and former University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas, among others.
“I love immersive conversations that peel back layers and allow people to reveal their truth,” Greene said. “What’s missing is a show that honors public media while capturing the spark and energy that sports fans crave. With Sports in America, we’ve nailed it.”
A Veteran Voice at the Helm
Greene, a former host of NPR’s Morning Edition and Up First, is well known for his ability to guide audiences through complex news events with depth and clarity. He currently also hosts the politics program Left, Right & Center from KCRW and PRX.
WHYY President and CEO Bill Marrazzo emphasized that the program reflects both the station’s mission and audience demand. “Sports play a vital role in our society. Behind every game is a story of identity, struggle, and triumph waiting to be told,” Marrazzo said.
A PRX Partnership
PRX, which also distributes This American Life, The Moth Radio Hour, and Latino USA, will represent Sports in America in both radio and podcast markets. Stephanie Kuo, PRX’s Vice President of Content, praised Greene’s ability to create “illuminating conversation” and connect with listeners.
The show will also incorporate select content from In the Moment with David Greene, a podcast produced with Religion of Sports. A video version is slated to launch on YouTube in 2026.
Greene credited his partners at WHYY and PRX for backing the project. “The sports world is full of incredible stories, and I’m honored to be part of the team bringing them to life,” he said.
With its mix of journalism, storytelling, and passion for athletics, Sports in America aims to expand the reach of public media while tapping into one of the few cultural spaces where Americans still gather together.
