White, Gray, Black Still Rule as Car Color Choices Shift Only at the Edges

Axalta Coating Systems

PHILADELPHIA, PAAxalta (NYSE: AXTA) said neutral tones continued to dominate global vehicle color choices in 2025, with white, black, and gray again accounting for the vast majority of cars produced worldwide, according to the company’s latest Global Automotive Color Popularity Report.

The annual report, now in its 73rd year, found that white remained the most popular automotive color globally at 29 percent, followed by black at 23 percent and gray at 22 percent. Together, the three colors reinforced the industry’s long-running preference for clean, understated design rather than bold experimentation.

The 2025 data showed gradual movement rather than sharp shifts. Silver continued to lose ground, slipping to 7 percent, while blue held steady at 6 percent, maintaining its position as the most popular non-neutral color worldwide. Red, green, brown or beige, and yellow or gold remained niche choices, each capturing relatively small but stable shares of the global market.

Axalta said regional differences highlight how culture, climate, and vehicle trends influence color preferences. In North America, white led at 31 percent but showed a slight decline as buyers increasingly opted for more expressive colors. Blue climbed to 10 percent and red to 7 percent, reflecting a modest shift toward personalization.

South America continued to favor white, which accounted for 35 percent of vehicles, driven in part by performance considerations in warmer climates. Silver rose to 14 percent, while gray reached 23 percent, signaling growing interest in lighter, contemporary tones.

In Europe, gray emerged as the most popular color at 26 percent, edging ahead of white at 25 percent and black at 22 percent. The region’s palette remains centered on refined, minimalist styling aligned with modern vehicle design.

Asia showed the most visible experimentation, particularly as electric vehicle adoption accelerates. Yellow and gold rose to 4 percent, green increased to 3 percent, and brighter shades such as orange and purple reached 2 percent. Even so, black strengthened its hold in the region, climbing to 26 percent overall.

Axalta compiles the report by analyzing automotive build data from major production regions and global markets. The findings provide automakers and suppliers with insight into current preferences while pointing to where subtle shifts may shape future design strategies.
