PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a full weekend closure of westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in the Grays Ferry section of Philadelphia to allow for essential bridge deck repairs on two structures.
Beginning at 9:00 PM on Friday, July 25, and continuing through 5:00 AM on Monday, July 28, westbound I-76 will be closed between the 34th Street off-ramp and the University Avenue on-ramp. The 34th Street on-ramp to I-76 West will also be closed during this period.
Several ramps will remain open, including the University Avenue and South Street ramps to I-76 West, as well as the I-76 West ramp to South Street. Regional traffic will be detoured via I-95 North and I-676 West (Vine Street Expressway). Local traffic will follow a detour utilizing Grays Ferry Avenue, Washington Avenue, 22nd Street, Walnut Street, and Schuylkill Avenue to reconnect with I-76 West.
The closures will facilitate the repair and resurfacing of two bridge decks: one spanning Grays Ferry Avenue, Wharton Street, and Reed Street, and the other over the Schuylkill River and CSX rail tracks. Crews will remove deteriorated latex-modified concrete, perform patching with fast-setting epoxy-based material, and apply a waterproof paving system to improve durability and reduce water infiltration.
PennDOT is coordinating the closures with the City of Philadelphia, SEPTA, the Sports Complex, and other regional stakeholders to mitigate impacts. However, significant congestion is expected on I-76 and surrounding streets. Electronic message boards will provide real-time alerts and detour guidance throughout the weekend. Motorists are strongly urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
