KING OF PRUSSIA, PAWashington Memorial Chapel’s Veterans Commission is proud to announce that it is hosting a special National Purple Heart Day Service and Reception on Saturday, August 9, at 11 AM at the Washington Memorial Chapel. The observance will pay tribute to America’s combat-wounded Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

The Purple Heart, originally established by General George Washington in 1782, holds deep historical significance at the Chapel, which itself stands as a spiritual memorial to Washington and the Continental Army. This year’s commemoration will include a solemn choral service, prayerful reflection, and the tolling of the bells to honor Purple Heart recipients past and present.

Vietnam Veteran, decorated hero, and dedicated advocate for fellow servicemembers Richard Custer will serve as the keynote speaker. Custer’s life of service in the U.S. Army—on the battlefield and beyond—embodies the values of courage, sacrifice, and devotion to country. In fact, while in Vietnam, Custer received four Bronze Stars, three Army Commendation Medals for heroism, five Purple Hearts for wounds received in battle, two Air Medals that represented in excess of 65 aerial flights over hostile territory while supporting ground combat operations and a Combat Infantry Badge. Additionally, his unit received distinguished Vietnamese Unit Valor and Humanitarian awards.

Today, Custer is renowned for his advocacy for Veterans, specifically his work with the National Purple Heart Chapter, Disabled American Veterans, and the Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program for PTSD. His words are expected to offer profound insight into the experience of combat-wounded Veterans and the importance of honoring their legacy.

A free special reception will be held immediately following the service, however a $10 donation is requested. To RSVP, visit https://evite.me/PsCe4WU3kP.

The Washington Memorial Chapel is located at 2000 Valley Forge Park Rd, King of Prussia, PA 19406.
