Tragic Newark Crash Claims Pedestrian’s Life as Car Veers Off Road

NEWARK, DE — Authorities are investigating a fatal collision that occurred Monday afternoon in Newark, claiming the life of a local man.

The incident took place on April 28, 2025, at approximately 2:51 p.m. A 2015 Nissan Altima, traveling northbound on Salem Church Road near Chapman Road, left the roadway and struck a pedestrian who was situated on the right shoulder of the same lane.

For reasons still under investigation, the Nissan veered to the right, hitting the pedestrian before continuing in a northeast direction. The vehicle traveled through a grassy area, collided with a tree, and overturned before coming to a stop.

The pedestrian, identified as a 48-year-old man from Newark, Delaware, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have withheld his name pending notification of his family.

The driver of the Nissan, an 18-year-old man from Bear, Delaware, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The Delaware State Police closed the roadway for about three hours as investigators examined the scene and cleared debris. The Collision Reconstruction Unit at Troop 2 has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
