Traffic Turmoil Ahead as Line Striping Returns to Key Center City Corridors

Traffic Restrictions

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Motorists traveling through Center City should brace for daytime slowdowns next week as PennDOT continues line striping along two of Philadelphia’s busiest east–west corridors.

The agency said crews will be working on Chestnut Street and Walnut Street as part of larger resurfacing efforts covering more than 200 miles of state-maintained roads across the region.

According to PennDOT, the following lane restrictions will be in place:

  • Monday, December 8, through Friday, December 12, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a lane closure will be active on sections of Chestnut Street between 22nd Street and Broad Street (Route 611).
  • During the same hours and dates, Walnut Street will also see a lane closure between Broad Street (Route 611) and 23rd Street.

PennDOT warned drivers to expect backups in both corridors, especially during the late morning and early afternoon hours when traffic volumes rise. The daytime work window is designed to keep overnight travel unaffected, but Center City commuters should anticipate delays and plan alternate routes if possible.

The striping is part of ongoing resurfacing projects that include milling, repairs, and new asphalt designed to extend roadway life and improve safety.

All work is weather dependent.
