WILMINGTON, DE — Delaware State Police have arrested a 44-year-old New Castle man on multiple felony charges following an attempted traffic stop in Wilmington that escalated into a foot pursuit and the recovery of firearms and narcotics.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on August 20, 2025, at approximately 11:00 p.m. when a trooper observed a Chevrolet Malibu at a red light on Northeast Boulevard with expired registration. After the vehicle turned onto East 26th Street, the trooper activated emergency equipment to initiate a stop. Police say the driver failed to pull over immediately, continuing until reaching the 1000 block of East 24th Street, where the car eventually stopped.
The driver, later identified as Kyrob Smith, allegedly exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Police report that despite multiple commands to stop, Smith ran into a nearby residence belonging to an acquaintance. The trooper pursued him inside, where Smith allegedly resisted arrest and repeatedly reached for his waistband. Investigators say Smith was armed with a firearm during the confrontation.
After a struggle, Smith was subdued with a Taser and taken into custody. Officers recovered a loaded .40-caliber handgun from Smith and, upon searching the vehicle, allegedly found a 12-gauge shotgun, additional ammunition, approximately 45 doses of MDMA, 30 grams of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.
Smith faces a long list of charges, including possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, multiple counts of possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, resisting arrest with force, and disregarding a police signal, among other offenses.
He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $40,850 secured bond.
Authorities remind the public that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
