WILMINGTON, DE — Farmers of Salem (FOS) announced the successful participation of Temple University student Ayden Dougherty in its summer internship program, highlighting the company’s continued commitment to mentoring the next generation of insurance professionals.
Dougherty, a North Philadelphia native and graduate of Roman Catholic High School, is entering his senior year at Temple, where he majors in Risk Management and Insurance. Originally pursuing economics, he pivoted to RMI after discovering a stronger interest in the field during his coursework in 2024.
His time at Farmers of Salem has provided him with broad exposure to the insurance industry. The internship includes rotations through multiple departments, giving students like Dougherty a comprehensive understanding of the company’s operations. “I have learned a lot about the insurance industry,” he said. “Everyone here has been extremely helpful and welcoming.”
Dougherty also praised the company’s workplace culture, noting that employees are encouraged to participate in activities like team lunches and baseball games. “You can really tell that Farmers of Salem cares for their employees,” he added.
The internship is part of the broader Intern Delaware program, which connects college students with Delaware-based businesses for summer learning and networking opportunities. Dougherty cited the program’s industry events and educational sessions with business and political leaders as especially valuable.
Farmers of Salem’s internship model emphasizes direct, practical involvement. Interns are placed alongside experienced staff and given real responsibilities. “The difference with Farmers of Salem’s internship program, compared to others, is that we ask interns to roll up their sleeves and get to work,” said Elizabeth Dean, the company’s Human Resources Director. Jim Reagan, Vice President of Product & Regulatory Compliance, echoed this sentiment, describing the job-shadowing model as “precisely what sets our internship experience apart.”
Temple University remains a leader in preparing students for the insurance sector, with standout programs in Risk Management & Insurance and Actuarial Science. The university’s curriculum is known for its rigor, and Farmers of Salem credits Temple’s faculty for producing students who are well-prepared for real-world work.
As Dougherty returns to campus to complete his final year, his experience at Farmers of Salem serves as a strong foundation for a future career in the insurance industry — and as a model for how regional companies can invest in homegrown talent.
