Study Reveals Communication Gaps in COPD Care Impact Patient Outcomes

WILMINGTON, DE — A new study conducted by the COPD Foundation and digital health company Phreesia highlights critical communication gaps between patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and their healthcare providers—gaps that may be hindering treatment outcomes and quality of life.

Based on survey responses from 1,615 COPD patients in January 2025, the research found that a significant portion of respondents are burdened by persistent symptoms such as shortness of breath and fatigue, with 43% reporting symptoms on 24 or more days per month. One-quarter said they experienced symptoms daily.

The study, published in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases: The Journal of the COPD Foundation and supported by Verona Pharma, revealed broader impacts of the disease: nearly two-thirds of patients reported moderate to severe disruptions to their daily activities, and half said COPD negatively affected their emotional health. Fifteen percent attributed job loss to their condition.

Despite the high symptom burden, medication use remains inconsistent. One in five patients reported not using any maintenance therapy. Among that group, 27% believed their condition wasn’t severe enough, and another 27% said their doctor had not recommended such treatment. However, 71% of these patients said they would be willing to try medications if advised.

Perhaps most concerning, only 45% of respondents said they had detailed discussions with their providers about symptoms. Additionally, 22% admitted to offering little to no symptom information during appointments. More than one-third of all patients—and even higher proportions among Black patients (46%) and those aged 45–64 (41%)—reported limited understanding of COPD, pointing to a critical need for targeted education.

The findings underscore the importance of meaningful patient-provider communication in managing chronic illness. Experts say equipping patients with clear, timely information could improve adherence to treatment and ultimately enhance health outcomes.
