PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Crane Arts Building in Philadelphia welcomes “The Luminous Forest,” an immersive exhibition by mixed-media artist Lanny Bergner, presented in partnership with Gravers Lane Gallery and InLiquid. The exhibition, which features intricate fiber sculptures, will be on display through June 28, 2025.
Known for his innovative use of industrial stainless steel and copper mesh, Bergner transforms these materials into intricate, semi-transparent sculptures. His technique involves cutting the mesh into shapes, flame-painting them with a butane or propane torch, and hand modeling the material to create unique bas-relief designs. Seams are finished with coated wire, and the final works often take on biomorphic and geometric forms inspired by the lush Pacific Northwest forests near his Fidalgo Island home.
The Luminous Forest invites viewers into a woodland-inspired environment featuring embossed mesh panels adorned with leaf motifs and hanging pods containing glowing geometric formations.
Bergner, a graduate of Temple University’s Tyler School of Art (M.F.A. in Sculpture, 1983), boasts an impressive résumé. His work has been featured in museum collections such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, among others.
The exhibition is open Wednesday through Saturday, from noon to 6 p.m., providing visitors a chance to experience the innovative artistry of a globally recognized sculptor. To learn more, visit https://www.inliquid.org/inliquid-gallery-events/luminous-forest.
