St. Louis Cardinals Acquire Contract of Lancaster Stormers Closer Gerson Moreno

LANCASTER, PA — The St. Louis Cardinals have purchased the contract of right-handed reliever Gerson Moreno from the Lancaster Stormers, marking another significant player advancement for the Atlantic League club this season.

Moreno, 29, will report to Triple-A Memphis following a strong stint with the Stormers. Since joining Lancaster on June 10, he posted a 3.26 ERA across 20 appearances, tallying five saves. Over 19.1 innings, he issued just four walks and recorded 33 strikeouts, demonstrating both command and dominance on the mound.

This marks the second contract purchase from Lancaster in 2025, following fellow right-hander Ryley Gilliam’s move to the Mexican League’s Monclova earlier in the season.

“Gerson is a top notch human being who also happens to be good at throwing a baseball,” said Stormers manager Ross Peeples. “He has a live arm, throws strikes and has two ‘plus’ pitches. I am very thankful that we were a part of helping him get back to a Major League organization. We wish him nothing but the best with the Cardinals.”

A native of the Dominican Republic, Moreno previously spent 10 years in the Detroit Tigers organization, where he worked with current Stormers pitching coach Mark Johnson. His 2023 campaign with Triple-A Rochester (Nationals) included 59 appearances, a 7–5 record, 10 saves, and a 3.14 ERA. In 2024, he pitched in 37 games for Triple-A Las Vegas (A’s), finishing with a 6.00 ERA.

Moreno’s departure underscores the Atlantic League’s continued role as a developmental pipeline to Major League Baseball, with more than 1,400 players having moved on to MLB organizations over its 26-year history.
