PHILADELPHIA, PA — As World Sickle Cell Awareness Day on June 19 draws near, a collaborative of 47 community organizations and medical providers across the Northeastern United States is preparing for its 7th annual Shine the Light on Sickle Cell campaign. Organized by SiNERGe (Sickle Cell Improvement in the Northeast Region through Education), the initiative highlights the urgent need for awareness, treatment, and advocacy for individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).
Sickle Cell Disease, a genetic blood disorder, affects over 100,000 people in the United States, with one-third of those living in the Northeast. SCD primarily impacts individuals of African, Caribbean, and other malaria-prone ancestries, causing intense pain, severe anemia, and life-threatening complications such as stroke and organ damage. Despite advances in treatment, there is still no universal cure, and adequate care remains out of reach for many.
Campaign Highlights
The Shine the Light on Sickle Cell campaign will feature events and activities throughout June. Its signature initiative is the illumination of public landmarks in red, symbolizing the urgency and determination needed in the fight against SCD. Scheduled illuminations span several prominent locations, including Boathouse Row and City Hall in Philadelphia, the Bromo Seltzer Tower in Baltimore, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
The campaign also includes a variety of community events, such as educational programs, blood drives, candlelight vigils, walks, and 5K runs. These gatherings foster awareness, strengthen support networks, and push for better access to treatment.
Persistent Challenges
For individuals living with SCD, known as sickle cell warriors, the battle often goes beyond their medical condition. Many face barriers to accessing care, compounded by the stigma and lack of understanding surrounding their disease. Recent portrayals in popular media, such as Netflix’s “Supacell” and Max’s drama series “The Pitt,” have brought attention to the realities and struggles of life with SCD, offering a glimpse of hope for greater visibility.
Despite the recent FDA approval of two treatments for SCD, cost and logistical hurdles limit their availability. The campaign emphasizes the need for broader accessibility and advocacy for treatment innovation.
A Regional and Global Effort
Backed by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) as part of the Sickle Cell Disease Treatment Demonstration Project, Shine the Light on Sickle Cell is concentrated in the Northeast region but resonates with a global cause. From New England to Puerto Rico, and beyond U.S. borders, the campaign aligns communities, caregivers, and medical professionals in combating this life-altering disease.
This June, landmarks illuminated in red and the voices of warriors and advocates will remind the world of the challenges posed by Sickle Cell Disease—and the collective call for change. Through unity and action, the Shine the Light campaign aims to advance a brighter future for all affected by SCD.
