CHELTENHAM TWP, PA — A key Montgomery County corridor will go dark for an entire weekend as PennDOT advances a multimillion-dollar effort to overhaul traffic flow and safety along Route 73.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that utility construction is scheduled on Route 73 (Church Road) as part of a $10.8 million project targeting improvements at the Greenwood Avenue and Rices Mill Road intersections in Cheltenham Township.
Beginning Saturday, February 28, and continuing through Sunday, March 1, a 24-hour closure will be in effect on Route 73 (Church Road) between Greenwood Avenue and Route 73 (Washington Lane). The full closure is expected to reroute traffic across surrounding arteries for the duration of the weekend.
During the shutdown, motorists will be directed to use Greenwood Avenue, Township Line Road, and Route 73 (Washington Lane). PennDOT officials caution that backups and delays will occur as traffic shifts to the detour routes.
All scheduled activities are weather dependent and may be adjusted if conditions require.
The broader $10.8 million project aims to improve safety and ease congestion at two heavily traveled intersections along the Route 73 corridor. Even a temporary full closure, however, can ripple through neighboring roadways and affect regional travel plans.
Drivers are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and monitor traffic conditions before heading out. For real-time road closures, detours, and traffic alerts throughout Chester County and the surrounding region, visit the MyChesCo Traffic Center at https://www.mychesco.com/traffic/.
