Plan Ahead! Major I-95 Closures in Philly Could Disrupt Your Travel Plans

Traffic Advisory

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced extended closures on southbound Interstate 95 and the ramp from eastbound I-676, starting Sunday, June 8, as part of the $329 million I-95 CAP project in Center City Philadelphia. These closures are expected to last approximately six weeks, concluding around Friday, July 18, with a pause over Independence Day weekend.

On Tuesday, June 3, preliminary work will begin with nighttime closures from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Southbound I-95 and the ramp from eastbound I-676 to southbound I-95 will be closed during these hours to facilitate equipment mobilization and preparation.

From June 8 onward, Sunday through Thursday nights, southbound I-95 and the ramp from eastbound I-676 will close from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Additionally, the left lane of northbound I-95 will close between Spruce Street and Market Street for the duration of the project.

Detours will be in place to guide motorists during these closures. Drivers traveling southbound on I-95 will be rerouted via the I-676 Interchange, Callowhill Street, and Columbus Boulevard, re-entering southbound I-95 at E. Morris Street/Water Street. Eastbound I-676 drivers heading to southbound I-95 will exit at 6th Street, proceed along Race Street and Columbus Boulevard, and rejoin southbound I-95 at E. Morris Street/Water Street.

Motorists are advised to budget additional travel time to account for delays and potential congestion in the affected areas. PennDOT has indicated that all scheduled activities are weather-dependent and subject to change if conditions necessitate adjustments.

The I-95 CAP project is a significant infrastructure effort aimed at enhancing roadway durability and reliability, while minimizing disruption remains a key goal for project coordinators. Drivers are urged to exercise patience and caution when navigating detour routes.
