PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia Theatre Company (PTC) is ending its milestone 50th anniversary season with a unique and imaginative musical, Small Ball. Scheduled to run from June 6–29, 2025, at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, the show offers a thought-provoking narrative about basketball, identity, and purpose. Co-produced by Daryl Morey, President of Basketball Operations for the Philadelphia 76ers, this East Coast premiere promises a blend of humor, social commentary, and a dynamic score.
Small Ball centers on Michael Jordan—not the iconic star, but a melancholy journeyman athlete. Drafted by the Lilliput Existers, a basketball team of six-inch-tall players from a tiny island nation, Michael faces cultural differences, existential struggles, and high-stakes challenges in an international league. The creative premise highlights a collision between sports passion and deeper philosophical themes, making it an intriguing offering for both theater enthusiasts and sports fans.
“This is exactly the kind of daring, idiosyncratic, and wildly entertaining show we love bringing to Philadelphia audiences,” said Tyler Dobrowsky, PTC’s Co-Artistic Director.
Broadway-Talent Cast and Creative Team
The production features a powerhouse cast led by Broadway veterans Adam Chanler-Berat (Next to Normal, Peter and the Starcatcher) and Jordan Dobson (Hadestown, Bad Cinderella). Joining them are Sarah Gliko, Nadina Hassan, Josh Totora, Lexi Thammavong, Rob Tucker, and Amy Warren, among others.
The creative team includes Co-Artistic Directors Taibi Magar and Tyler Dobrowsky as directors, Mickle Maher (book), Merel van Dijk and Anthony Barilla (original score), Katie Spelman (choreography), Christopher Ash (scenic design), Olivera Gajic (costume design), and more accomplished professionals.
Opening Gala and Special Programming
The season-closing musical will kick off with a special 50th Anniversary Gala on June 11 at 7:30 PM. Additionally, PTC has planned an array of programming, including student matinees, community-focused events, and performances with accessibility accommodations. Highlights include Black Theatre Night on June 13, an ASL-interpreted show on June 26, and pre- and post-show conversations for select performances.
