PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the commencement of a $2.1 million safety improvement project on Route 611 (Broad Street) in Philadelphia. This project targets a 1.1-mile corridor stretching from Allegheny Avenue to Hunting Park Avenue and aims to significantly enhance roadway safety.
Beginning Monday, June 2, and continuing through Friday, June 6, lane closures will be in effect on Broad Street in both directions from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Motorists traveling through the area are advised to anticipate delays and allow extra time, as traffic backups are expected. All construction is weather-dependent.
The project involves replacing the existing two-way left-turn lane with raised concrete medians, installing ADA-compliant ramps, adding lane separator curbs, and upgrading pavement markings at all crosswalks. These enhancements are designed to address the prevalent dangers along this stretch of road, which has seen frequent pedestrian, angle, and rear-end crashes.
James J. Anderson Construction Company, Inc., based in Philadelphia, has been appointed as the general contractor for the federally funded project. By reducing the risk of crashes, the initiative intends to make the corridor safer for all road users, including drivers and pedestrians.
The construction work is scheduled to conclude by the summer of 2025.
