NEWARK, DE — Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal collision that claimed the life of an 89-year-old New Castle man early Friday morning in Newark.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:07 a.m. on Pulaski Highway near Biddle Avenue. According to investigators, a 2020 white Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling westbound in the left lane when the pedestrian, whose vehicle had become disabled on the right shoulder, attempted to cross the westbound lanes of the highway.
As he entered the roadway, the man stepped into the Jeep’s path and was struck. Despite being transported to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Authorities have withheld his name pending family notification.
The Jeep’s driver, a 30-year-old man from Bear, Delaware, and his 26-year-old female passenger were not injured in the crash.
The roadway was closed for approximately four and a half hours while the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit conducted an on-scene investigation and cleared debris.
