PHILADELPHIA, PA — Drivers heading north on Interstate 95 should expect overnight delays next week as PennDOT begins bridge repair work on the Girard Point Bridge in Southwest Philadelphia.
At a Glance
- Roads Affected: I-95 Northbound between Enterprise Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611)
- Dates: Monday, April 6 – Thursday, April 9
- Times: 9:00 PM – 5:00 AM (overnight)
- Reason: Bridge repairs on Girard Point Bridge
PennDOT said a right lane closure will begin each night from 9:00 PM to midnight, followed by a second lane closure from midnight through 5:00 AM, reducing capacity along this heavily traveled corridor.
Drivers should plan extra time and expect delays, especially as traffic narrows to fewer lanes overnight near the Schuylkill River crossing.
No detour has been announced. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes where possible to avoid congestion along I-95 during overnight hours.
The work is part of a $261.5 million, multi-phase project to rehabilitate the 5,183-foot Girard Point Bridge and nine approach structures. Improvements include deck repairs, barrier replacements, structural steel rehabilitation, upgraded lighting and drainage systems, and enhancements to intelligent transportation systems.
PennDOT said three lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction during peak hours throughout construction, with additional off-peak and weekend restrictions planned as work progresses. The project is expected to continue through early 2031.
All work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled if necessary.
